The University of Macedonia is the second and “youngest” University of the city of Thessaloniki and it specializes in economic and social sciences. More than 12,000 students study at the University of Macedonia in economic, administration, social and political related fields.
Thessaloniki is the European Youth Capital for 2014 and a former European Capital of Culture. Fifteen of the city's monuments are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. In 2013 Thessaloniki was listed as one of National Geographic's 20 ‘Must-See’ places in the world and ranked 5th in Lonely Planet’s Top 10 party cities.
The city also hosted a number of events during the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and continues to be a vibrant academic, cultural and tourist destination.
